The original kits were designed and written by Carl Seyfert, Geology Professor Emeritus, and have been excellent sellers. Cassette boxes 2¼” by 41/2” contain mineral, fossil, and rock specimens, most of which are 1/2” to 3/4” in size. All specimens are identified correctly and in many kits, the locality is included. The exterior cover attractively illustrates the theme of the kit. Mineral Kits

Ml-Gemstones – Contains six beautifully colored tumbled polished stones: rose quartz, carnelian, jasper, moss agate, aventurine, and amethyst. A striking attractive kit – $2.00
M2-Fluorite Octahedrons – Two octahedrons illustrate the four directions of cleavage of fluorite. Translucent, ranging in color from white to lavender and purple, from southern Illinois $2.00

Fossil Kits

Fl Fossil Shark Teeth – This kit contains four fossil shark teeth representing different species of sharks from the Miocene Epoch (20 million years ago). Teeth were collected at Venice, Florida – $2.00

F2 Fossil fish – Includes fish that lived during the Eocene Epoch (about 50 million years ago) from the Green River Formation of southwestern Wyoming Price: Partial fish $2.50, three quarter fish $3,50, near complete fish $4.50.

F3 Fossils of the Jurassic Period: Time of the Dinosaurs – Includes a piece of dinosaur bone, a belemnite (a squid-like animal), an oyster, and star-shaped stem pieces from a crinoid (sea lily). For those not wishing to sell dinosaur bone, this kit can be modified by omitting the dinosaur bone – $2.00

F4 Did a Meteorite Cause Dinosaur Extinction? .. This kit contains four specimens; meteorite oxide crust, dinosaur bone, and an oyster and ammonite, which became extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs. The discussion explains that the extinctions may have been caused by meteorite impact $2.00

F5 Fossil Fern – An attractive specimen of silvery or crème colored fern leaves on black shale. An outstanding example of Pennsylvanian age plants (300 million years old) from St. Clair, PA $2.00

Geological Education Kits

Gl What is a Mineral? – A kit containing eight colorful minerals: fluorite, biotite, sodalite, quartz, limonite, pyrite, hematite, and gypsum. The discussion gives the definition of a mineral $2.00

G2 What is a Fossil? – A kit containing 6 fossils from New York, Tennessee, Wyoming, Arizona and Utah. Included are horn coral, crinoid, pelecypod (oyster), dinosaur bone, petrified wood and gastropod (snail). Explanatory paragraphs define fossil, discuss modes of preservation, uses of fossils to indicate age of the rock and ancient environment $2.00

G3 What is a Rock? – includes eight specimens, igneous: basalt and granite; sedimentary: shale, limestone, dolostone and sandstone; metamorphic: slate and marble. Explanatory paragraphs define rock and discuss the origin of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks $2.00

G4 Igneous Rocks – Includes six specimens, intrusive: diabase and granite; and volcanic: obsidian, pumice, rhyolite and basalt. Discussion paragraphs explain how to tell intrusive from volcanic rocks on the basis of grain size, and discuss the formation of obsidian and pumice, and the relationship between cooling rate and grain size $2.00

Regional Kits

R1 Minerals of the Lockport Formation -The Lockport Formation is the caprock of Niagara Falls. Cavities in this formation contain calcite, dolomite, gypsum (alabaster and selenite varieties). These arc the minerals which make up this kit $2.00

R2 Minerals of Montana – Six minerals, three of them highly colored, make an attractive kit. Discussion mentions localities, occurrence, and uses of minerals. The kit includes calcite, pyrite, muscovite mica, bornite hematite, and opalized wood $2.00

R3 Minerals of New York State – Six minerals with a description of their practical uses. Includes Herkimer “diamond” (quartz), dolomite, gypsum, feldspar, garnet, and mica $2.00

CA2 Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils from Niagara Falls An 81/2” x 11” card with an educational description of the formation of Niagara Falls on the back of the card. The card has three minerals, one fossil, and fifteen rock specimens from fifteen different layers in the Niagara Gorge. Specimens are displayed on a labeled diagram showing a geologic section with the age of the rock layers. This product is information packed $4.00

Specimens are glued on sturdy cardboard and are labeled with a specimen name and locality. All cards come in clear plastic bags.

Educational Collections

Our newest offering, these collections of 9 to 10 specimens 1” to 2”in size, are suitable for study. Included are testing materials and instruction sheets which make them self explanatory. Each collection is packaged in a sturdy compartmentalized box 7″ inches square. The minerals are numbered and are loose in their compartments to facilitate study. The collections have been thoughtfully assembled and written by our own in house, professor of geology.

MH1 Mohs Hardness Scale Collection – Hardness, or the scratch-ability of’ a mineral is an important diagnostic tool for mineral identification. This collectioncontains a complete (except for diamond) set of minerals making up the Mohs Hardness Scale. Each is labeled with its hardness number. Testing materials include a glass plate, steel nail, and a copper penny. $10.00

MH2 Physical Properties of Minerals This collection contains 10 specimens carefully selected to illustrate the physical properties used in the identification of minerals, teaching sheets and testing materials including a magnet, streak plate and glass plate. $10.00
Minerals

Tektites – Tektites are a natural glass formed from rock melted by the impact of a large meteorite. This melt is thrown out of the meteor crater into space where it hardens Into glass. It then re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere. They are shaped like pitted teardrops, spheres, disks, etc.
