Orthoceras are nautiloid with straight shells from the Ordovician Period that was roughly 400 million years ago. Ortho means "straight" and ceras means "horn" as their shells were long and conical. They are related to present-day squids and could be as small as just a few inches or as large as 6 feet.

Ammonites are squid-like prehistoric creatures that swam the oceans in a coiled shell 240-65 million years ago. They had tentacles and swam around the sea in a buoyant shell and like the orthoceras, they ranged in size from a couple inches to over 6 feet.
