Howlite is a borate mineral (any naturally occurring compounds of oxygen and boron) found in sedimentary rock. It is found in large nodules resembling a cauliflower.

Howlite is white with brown or gray-black veins and has a porous texture. It was first introduced to the academic world in 1868 by Canadian scientist Henry How, who discovered it in Nova Scotia, Canada and for whom this mineral is named.

Because it is easily dyed, this gemstone is commonly passed off as a cheap alternative to turquoise.
