This stunning piece of petrified wood from over 2.5 million years ago is filled with warm browns, oranges and reds. The smooth, polished surface contrasts with the rough, raw outer layer to make for a beautiful specimen.
In the late Tertiary period, blankets of rainforest surrounding volcanoes were plentiful throughout Indonesia. After a volcanic eruption these trees were buried by ash and lava eliminating any microbes that would rot the wood. The wood was replaced with silica-rich minerals like chalcedony, quartz, calcite, opal and jasper. The beautiful colors in the wood come from assorted trace elements; iron creates shades of brown and orange.
