The iron meteorites of the Campo del Cielo area in Argentina fell to earth between 4,000 - 6,000 years ago. Estimated at over 4 billion years old, this meteorite is the heaviest ever recorded. The field of craters span roughly 2 by 12 miles and was first discovered in 1571. Fragments range in size from grains of sand to pieces that weigh 35 ton. This meteorite is composed of 93% iron, 75% nickel, and other minor elements.
