Iolite, or Cordierite, is a gemstone that occurs in a light to deep blueish-purple color due to iron with the deeper colored stones being more valuable. It gets its name from the Greek word "ios" because of its rich violet color. According to legend, Vikings used thin pieces of this gem to find the sun on cloudy days. Iolite is rarely treated because its chemistry does not allow for color enhancement. This mineral is most commonly found in Brazil, Madagascar, Burma, India and Sri Lanka.
Because iolite is rarely treated and falls at 7.0-7.5 on the Moh's hardness scale, it is a popular gemstone for jewelers. It is also the stone for the 21st wedding anniversary. Iolite is the most pleochroic gemstone, meaning it will display a different color from different angles.
Metaphysical Meaning and Healing Properties: Iolite is a great vision stone to have for meditation as it is calming while it simultaneously activates the psychic talents. It clears the mind and focuses thoughts to assist with processing and understanding situations. One will find an increase in certainty and self-assurance as iolite helps to trust and listen to oneself. It is known to increase memory, creativity, and curiosity. This stone opens the Third Eye (sixth chakra) chakra. Physically, iolite is believed to assist with reducing body fats, overcoming addiction, improving eyesight, boosting blood circulation, and relieving pain from migraines and headaches.
