Red Aventurine is a variety of translucent quartz with inclusions of other minerals such as muscovite mica, which produces its sparkling effect known as aventurescence. The red color is due to the presence of hematite, lepidolite or goethite. Aventurine also occurs in yellow, pink, brown, orange, white, blue, gray--and most notably--green.

The word aventurine comes from the Italian word all'aventura meaning "by chance" because Italian glass was unintentionally made when copper particles were dumped into a vat of molten glass.

Although it is found all over the world, noteworthy localities of red aventurine are Italy, India, Russia, Brazil, Spain and Tanzania.
