Every sandstone is unique and this piece is no exception!
Sandstone is one of the most common types of sedimentary rock found in any kind of environment where there is water--including deserts!
This mineral is created when sand is cemented together into rock. The bands formed are due to layers of sand that differ characteristically.
Rhyolite Sandstone, also called “Rainbow Rock,” is found along the Utah/Nevada border. It began as volcanic ash spewed from the mouth of a volcano. With exposure to heat and pressure it turned to stone. Iron oxide produces its colors.
